We visited Venice a couple weeks before the city was hit by its worst flooding in 50 years. The recent flood was caused by a combination of a high tide coinciding with a storm surge caused by high north-easterly winds blowing over the Adriatic Sea. When this combo occurs, they call it an Acqua Alta (high water). Acqua Altas are not out of the ordinary, but they are becoming way more frequent and more severe. While this latest Acqua Alta is only the second highest tide in recorded history, half of the highest ten tides on record have occurred in the past 20 years, and the most recent was only last year.
