The Burren

The Burren is a region in County Clare that often times resembles a moon scape more than countryside. It is a karst plateau of ancient limestone rock formations creating pavements, cliffs, fissures and bizarre cracks. In 1651, one of Cromwell’s soldiers famously stated that the Burren is, “a country where there is not water enough to drown a man, wood enough to hang one nor earth enough to bury one….. yet their cattle are very fat.” The paradox is, though the area appears rather barren, it actually supports diverse ecosystems from various climatic zones, including Alpine, Arctic and Mediterranean! People have been creatively farming here for 6,000 years and have left many megalithic structures as monuments to their culture. It’s no wonder that the Burren is internationally recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

  1. I admire your wee summer fun. I also admire the flip; I hope it turned out ok. I found the seasonal variety interesting. I’d be interested to know the percentage of Mediterranean weather, but really if there’s not enough water to drown a person why bother.
