We couldn’t drive up the Hudson River Valley without exploring the famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery! The Dutch began settling in this area back in the 1600s. The author Washington Irving spent time here in the late 1700s, and wrote the story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow based on local customs and his interactions with the Dutch farming community he met in the area.
About 25 miles north of New York City, the village of Sleepy Hollow is perched on the east bank of the Hudson River. The natural beauty of the land drew oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller to purchase land on which to build his great estate in the late 1800s. He is buried in Sleepy Hollow, along with the likes of Andrew Carnegie and many other wealthy Americans.
