RSPB Dunnet Head

Dunnet Head is the true northernmost point on mainland Britain, about 10.5 miles west of John O’Groats in Caithness, Scotland. It’s a rugged, windswept peninsula with dramatic cliffs and a panoramic view of the Orkney Islands (on a clear day). There are many nesting sea birds along the cliffs, including Puffins!

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) was formed by the merger of two smaller societies that were comprised solely of women, The Plumage League and The Fin, Fur and Feather Folk. They advocated against the use of skins and feathers in popular women’s fashions in the late 1800’s. In particular, they campaigned against ‘plume hunting’, which supplied exotic feathers from birds to decorate women’s hats in high society. In it’s inception in 1881, the society maintained itself by two simple rules:

1 – That Members shall discourage the wanton destruction of Birds, and interest themselves generally in their protection

2 – That Lady-Members shall refrain from wearing the feathers of any bird not killed for purposes of food, the ostrich only excepted.

Today, the RSPB has over 1 million members and manages over 200 reserves throughout the United Kingdom.

  1. Okay, we’ll start with how lovely these pictures are. The portrait of Chris is a keeper; he looks downright British. And now, full disclosure: I was cleaning behind a shelf I haven’t moved in years and found THAT HAT, only irretrievably and scarily embedded with dog hair, cat hair, and dust bunny hair. It has found a new home in a bin.

    1. Yes, Dunnet Head is an incredibly lovely place. Sorry to hear about your manky old Scottish hat infestation tho! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that it didn’t take to breeding back there 😝

  2. Away from the maddening crowd comes to mind. And Chris you’re looking particularly British in the process. England is undoubtedly a beautiful isle, albeit chilly to the bone a bit wet.

    1. Yes, it definitely felt like we were very far from civilization up there. Such an isolated environment always puts me in a very peaceful frame of mind. Unfortunately, the cold and wind did make the moment a touch fleeting.

  3. Regarding the latest photo of Chris. …..To know that guy is one half Mexican is hard to believe. To know he is one half English/Scottish is right there before our eyes. Whatever, Chris, you’re one cool dude !

    1. Unfortunately, my English/Scottish blood didn’t make me immune from the elements … guess that’s my Mexican blood showing through! And I’d still favor a good burrito to haggis and day!
