Rome

We managed to spend a rainy day in Rome while traveling across Italy. We had to explore the famous Roman Forum with the Palatine Hill, Colosseum and Circus Maximus. This area, in the middle of the modern city of Rome, was the religious, civic and commercial center of ancient Rome. Julius Caesar began redeveloping the small valley into a major social center with impressive buildings, temples and monuments. Later leaders of ancient Rome continued to expand and rebuild structures in the area. Natural and human created disasters repeatedly leveled the buildings, but new ones were erected on their remains until the demise of the Roman Empire. Excavation began in the late 1800s and continues today. Here’s a gallery with some highlights of our day.
