Rambut Siwi Temple

The history of this beautiful Hindu temple, which is built on rock cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, is shrouded in myth. It was already in existence when the revered sage, Dang Hyang Nirartha, traveled to the temple in the mid 16th century. It is said that, as a gift to the temple, the holy man left a lock of his hair behind. The hair has since become a sacred relic that is credited with protecting the temple (even rebuilding it), along with protecting the surrounding villagers and any travelers who pass through the area. The name of the temple itself means: lock of hair (Rambut) that is venerated (Siwi)!

We never saw the lock of holy hair, but there was a lot of furry lichens on the astonishing display of detailed carvings and ancient statues at the temple. We originally hadn’t planed to spend much time at Rambut Siwi Temple, but the place was so beautiful that we spent an entire day wondering about. The awesome beach view wasn’t too bad either!

    1. Hey Joline! Yeah, definitely plan on avoiding China. Closest we’re thinking of getting might be Japan at this point …
Please say hi to the family for us! : )
