Mohonk Preserve

Angela has been dreaming of visiting the Mohonk Mountain House for years. It was one of the inspirations for the haunted hotel in Steven King’s masterpiece, The Shining. You can’t drive to the Mohonk Mountain House unless you have a reservation to stay at the hotel or restaurant, so we hiked 2.5 miles through the Mohonk Preserve in order to visit the property.

The many trails, which snake through the private preserve, are dotted with wooden platforms, gazebos and walkways. They top out at the Smiley Tower, which is perched on Sky Top, the highest point in the preserve, and gave us amazing panoramic views over upstate New York, Lake Mohonk and the Mohonk Mountain House.

  1. Great photos! So glad you are back on the road again. The Mohonk Mountain House is a little creepy but the surrounding scenery is spectacular! And your info blurbs add great color.
Think I told you I would be sharing your blog with my girlfriend Carm. She’s been to Europe a number of times & has family in Germany. Not sure if you’ll hear from her.
    Happy traveling!
