Whangārei Falls, originally known as Otuihau by the Māori, is located on the Hātea River
The 85 foot Whangārei Falls is located on lands that were bought by Archibald Clapham in the 1920’s to prevent commercial exploitation of the falls.
In 1946, the Whangārei Businessmen’s Association bought the land from Clapham, on behalf of the citizens of Whangārei, and turned it into a public park.
Here’s a photo of Rainbow Falls … or Waianiwaniwa, which in Māori translates to ‘Waters of the Rainbow.” The falls, on the Kerikeri River, plunge almost 90 feet in a single drop.
Wharepoke Falls is located on the Waipekakoura River, which is a tributary to the Kerikeri River
Further up the Waipekakoura River, and almost to the Kerikeri Inlet, sits the historic Stone Store. Built in 1832 as a warehouse by the Church Missionary Society, The Stone Store is New Zealand’s oldest undamaged stone building.
Here’s our first sighting of the west coast! This photo looks out onto Te Pouahi, which is the northern head of the Hokianga Harbour.
