Milford Sound

Milford Sound is actually a fjord. Fjords are flooded glacial valleys, while sounds are usually flooded river valleys. But that line of thinking led me to wondering why the SF Bay is not called the SF Sound, considering that it’s essentially the flooded delta of the Merced River?

After a bit of research on the interwebs, I am now able to distinguish the difference between a fjord, a bay and a sound : )

  • A fjord is a flooded glacial valley.
  • A bay is an inland body of water, usually a flooded river, that is connected to a larger body of water, usually an ocean, by only one inlet.
  • A sound is an inland body of water that is connected to a larger body of water by more than one inlets.

Now I just need to figure out what a bight is ; p

That’s our boat! … the white one on the left … seeing as there are more than one in the pic
495 foot tall Stirling Falls, one of two permanent falls into Milford Fjord (I’m calling it that now because I like the SOUND of it better … get it … I know Tracy does ; )
Another view of Stirling Falls with a tour boat in the foreground. The boats actually dunk their bows into the bottom of the falls & let people shower if they like.

531 foot tall Lady Bowen Falls, the second of two permanent falls into Milford Fjord.
