Milford Sound is actually a fjord. Fjords are flooded glacial valleys, while sounds are usually flooded river valleys. But that line of thinking led me to wondering why the SF Bay is not called the SF Sound, considering that it’s essentially the flooded delta of the Merced River?
After a bit of research on the interwebs, I am now able to distinguish the difference between a fjord, a bay and a sound : )
- A fjord is a flooded glacial valley.
- A bay is an inland body of water, usually a flooded river, that is connected to a larger body of water, usually an ocean, by only one inlet.
- A sound is an inland body of water that is connected to a larger body of water by more than one inlets.
Now I just need to figure out what a bight is ; p
