Locked down in Kathmandu

So, we’ve gotten way behind with our postings to the blog again : / According to our last post, we are happily tromping around the beautiful, ancient temples of Cambodia. In real time though, we are holed up in a very comfortable little hotel in central Kathmandu, Nepal.

AJ checking the latest news stories over her morning juice in our lovely hotel garden.

Nepal is currently very Coronavirus free. There was a single confirmed case about a month ago, in which the individual has since fully recovered. Unfortunately, another case was confirmed a couple days ago, which has prompted the Nepalese government to impose a complete lockdown on most of the country. A strict ‘shelter in place’ order has been declared in the Kathmandu Valley and many other parts of Nepal, which forbids people from walking or driving on the streets. Many of the local inhabitants were able to return to their home villages before the order was imposed, which has left the normally chaotic streets of Kathmandu completely vacant.

Dinner time on tourist row. Just 3 days ago this street was a crazy mix of cars, scooters, shop venders and tourists that would completely overwhelm your senses …

In addition to the ‘shelter in place’ declaration, the government has also forbidden any flights from arriving or departing Tribhuvan Airport, the only International airport in Nepal, until March 31st. This has left us in rather pleasant confinement at the previously mentioned hotel in Central Kathmandu. We have a soft bed, hot water, plenty of good food, a flat screen tv, a subscription to Netflix and some amazingly gracious hosts … they even brought us candy bars this morning! Life is a good!! … though a touch boring : )

We’ll leave you with a view of the Kathmandu from the rooftop balcony of our hotel:

  1. Is this the time you sit down and write a book? Contemplate the meaning of life? Consider your itinerary for the next year? Have you zoomed yet? We should get the group together for game night through zooming. My nephew mentioned ticket to ride?
