Lake Pukaki

Lake Pukaki is a terminus lake at the end of a long glacial valley which leads back to Aoraki, or Mount Cook. Aoraki is the tallest mountain in New Zealand’s southern alps. Sadly, you can’t see Aoraki very well because it’s so far in the distance, and covered in clouds.

Also, Lake Pukaki is another Lord of the Rings location … actually, a Hobbit filming location. They filmed ‘Laketown’ here.

  1. Ange & Chris: Just a note to wish you both a Merry Christmas. It’s still the afternoon of 12/24 here in Novato, CA, but heard Santa had already travelled over New Zealand erlier today so thought we’d better send Xmas wishes before it’s New Years. You have some great pictures….giant lupines, cute Bully’s & all that scenery. Are you ever going to return ?? Have a blast & take in some new Xmas customs.

  2. Merry Christmas to you guys! Yes, it’s a sunny, warm Christmas day down here (finally no rain!). We hear it’s a kiwi tradition to go to the beach today. Sounds like a good plan to me! I want to try a beach with nesting penguins though! Hopefully we’ll get some pics.
