La Sagrada Familia

Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia “Expiatory Church of the Holy Family” is a massive, uniquely crazy & amazingly beautiful Roman Catholic Church in Barcelona, designed by Antoni Goudí.

Construction of the church began in 1882, and by the time of Goudí’s death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project had been completed. Goudí is buried in the crypt under the the main sanctuary of the church. As of today, the structure is around 70% complete. The remaining major structures are set to be completed by 2026, the centennial of Goudí’s death, and the final decorative elements should be completed by 2030 or 2032.

When finished, the church will have a total of eighteen spires, eight of which have been built as of today. Each will represent, in ascending order of height, the Twelve Apostles, the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists and Jesus Christ. When finished, Sagrada Family will be the tallest church in the world at 560 feet.

Goudí’s original plans for the church call for three grand facades. The Nativity facade, which faces east, was finished in 1935. Work on the Passion facade, facing west, was begun in 1954 and finished in 1976. Work on the south facing Glory facade began in 2002.

La Sagrada Familia is by far the most amazing man made structure we have ever seen … here are a few pictures of the churches exterior. Enjoy!
