Kauri Trees

We took an eye-opening walk through a Kauri forest the other day.  We had seen a few smaller Kauri trees over the past couple weeks & was wondering what the big fuss was all about … I thought our Redwoods are WAY more spectacular.  During our walk, I definitely came to understand just how amazing the Kauri tree is!!

Kauri trees are the largest (by volume) species of tree in New Zealand, and are among the most ancient in the world, appearing between 135 – 190 million years ago.

Kauri collar rot, a disease that is believed to be spread on people’s shoes or by mammals, particularly feral pigs, has been killing trees since the 1970’s.  To combat the disease, the Department of Conservation has set up footwear cleaning stations at the trailheads to all Kauri Forests.

Tane Mahuta (God of the Forest).  Largest known living Kauri Tree.  The pic doesn’t due justice to how massive this tree actually is!  It’s trunk measures 60 feet from the ground to where the branches start, and almost 46 feet around at it’s thickest point : o

Te Matua Ngahere (Father of the Forest).  Second largest known living Kauri Tree.  Trunk measures 34 feet tall and 54 feet around!  Once again, hard to tell how massive this tree is by a photo … but Angela is standing about 100 feet away from it.

  1. I thought the thunder canary a monument of epic proportions, but now, below the kauri trees it’s squawk is a little less thunderous.
