Gougane Barra and Muckross Abbey

Continuing our travels across the Irish countryside, we stopped at a couple of lovely parks.

Gougane Barra Forest Park is a scenic valley at the edge of the Sheehy mountains in County Cork. The park is named after Gouganebarra Lake, the headwaters for the River Lee, which flows all the way to the city of Cork on the coast of the Celtic Sea. On a tiny promontory in the lake stands the small, but picturesque chapel of St. Finbarr’s Oratory. This spot is where St. Finbarr, patron saint of Cork, founded his monastery in the 6th century. The surrounding forest is lush and peaceful, populated by brightly metallic-colored dragonflies and beautiful wildflowers.

Muckross Abbey is located on the banks of Lough Leanne in the Killarney National Park in County Kerry. It was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary and has a sadly violent history of being repeatedly raided by local gangs, as well as the armies of the English crown. It is culturally notable as the burial place of the last, great Gaelic Irish poets, O’ Rathaille and O’Suilleabhain.

    1. What?! Can’t we sell you some overpriced drugs or a useless streaming subscription?! 😜

Just kidding! We love all your comments – this may be a small thing, but it means a lot just to stay in touch with people we love while we’re traveling. And we’re so glad that you enjoy sharing the journey!
