We read that Tawhai Falls was the filming location for the scene in the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, in which Gollum was captured by Faramir and his rangers. It turns out that the scene was actually filmed at a completely different location, Mangawhero Falls. Tawhai Falls is still frequently mistaken for the filming location, and is now a popular tourist stop. There’s even a sign post at the trailhead to the falls labeled, “Gollum’s Pool”.
Filming location or not, we had a very pleasant hike to Tawhai, which is very pretty waterfall!

It’s actually called Mt Ngauruhoe, but they used it as the filming location for Lord of the Rings when Frodo destroys the ring at the volcano in Mordor. Summit is sacred to the Maori, so we just tip toed around it : )
