Dubrovnik

In June of 1991, the Republic of Croatia declared independence from the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia. Unfortunately, the first few years in the new republic were not peaceful ones. The ancient walled city of Dubrovnik, located in the very southern part of the Croatia, was laid siege to by the Yugoslav People’s Army (mostly comprised of Serbian forces) just months after Croatia declared their independence. The invading forces claimed that the city was more historically aligned with coastal Montenegro, its neighbor to the south, and should not remain in Croatia. After 7 months of artillery attacks, the Croatian army finally liberated the city in May of 1992. There was extensive damage to the ancient city’s walls, and over half the buildings in the old town were destroyed or damaged. Between 1995 and 1999, the majority of the city was painstakingly restored to its original condition, and today Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean.

In the awesome dept … Old town Dubrovnik is featured in the HBO series Game of Thrones as Kings Landing; and in Star Wars: The Last Jedi as Cantonica.

We spent a semi-healthy week in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik after recovering from our horrible Scottish cold in Istanbul. Here are a couple photo galleries from our stay … enjoy!!
