Devon

While in Devon we decided to explore a couple more holiday beach destinations. On the northern coast, the city of Ilfracombe is home to Tunnels Beaches. In the 1820’s, tunnels were hand carved through the rocky sea cliffs in order to create separate, private bathing areas for men and women according to Victorian etiquette. Local entrepreneurs developed the tunnels and bathing pools to transform the small fishing village of Ilfracombe into a popular seaside resort. On the southern coast, Burgh Island, connected to the mainland at low tide by Bigbury Beach, is a popular holiday resort, too. An iconic art deco landmark, the Burgh Island Hotel was also the location for one of Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries.

  1. Another location for one of the Hercule Poirot mysteries? At least the tractor for the hotel guests seems rather familiar as well as the hotel. I saw a few bathers so I assume the water is warm enough even though the overcast makes it seem rather chilly. Still very picturesque.

    1. Good eye! The Poirot tv series filmed Evil Under the Sun at Burgh Island. Christie may have even written the story with this resort in mind – it certainly fits the bill. But, yes, a bit chilly for us California folk. Although it seems the British are well used to it and make any excuse to go to the beach, no matter how miserable it looks to us!

  2. Wow. Beautiful. You lucky two. Thanks for taking me along on your wonderful journey. I so enjoy these photos. ❤️🌈👏

  3. Wow! Beautiful. Surprised to see so many palm trees in your town shots. And quite the tidal difference at the coast.

That place has everything, including gun bunkers and , did I see in the background, nuclear power towers ?

    Mmm, warm water 😅

    1. The tidal changes are crazy here! It’s especially evident at the river mouth areas.
I don’t think there’s any nuclear power here, though. This general area was massive for coal production and everything used to be fueled by that. Now I think it’s biomass.
