We had a great time exploring the beautiful countryside around Wales. It’s called the ‘land of castles’ because it has more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe! We’ll definitely return for more culture, history, natural beauty and, of course, the wonderful people! Here are a few random parting shots before we move farther north. Enjoy!
Kennnixton Farmhouse, originally built around 1850 and moved in 2012 to St. Fagans National Museum of History
The Vulcan Pub as it was in 1915 when it was located in downtown Cardiff, before relocation to St. Fagans
Saint Teilo’s Church from the 18th century is also on display at St. Fagans
The walls of this Roman Catholic Church are brightly decorated with beautifully restored biblical paintings
Ok, don’t know what part of the Bible this is….
The medieval stone gated bridge in Monmouth over the River Monnow is the only one of its type remaining in Britain
Conwy Castle where the Afon Gyffin meets the River Conwy
Beaumaris Castle on the island of Anglesey in northwestern Wales
The main gate at Beaumaris
The damp plays havoc with the ceiling of the chapel
Though construction was never finished, the ramparts of the medieval castle are still quite impressive
A really substantial gate
The entrance gate to Harlech Castle on the western Welsh coast
Built in the late 1200’s, this castle has seen many sieges over the centuries
Contemplating the murder holes
So what’s a “Murder Hole” ??
A murder hole is a hole in the ceiling of a castle gateway through which arrows could be shot, rocks thrown, or boiling oil poured (etc.) onto attackers caught behind a portcullis below. Not a fun place to be…..
