Continuing the Agatha Christie fan-girl tour, l had to check out the place where she grew up – the Victorian beach city of Torquay. It was a very popular holiday destination back in its day. Quite a few of the places young Agatha liked to frequent are still there, though perhaps not in the fancy condition she would have experienced. She enjoyed such pastimes as swimming at the many beaches, attending events at the Pavilion and strolling along the Princess Pier. Agatha Christie and her first husband, Archie, even spent their honeymoon at the Grand Hotel in Torquay in 1914.
The modern pedestrian bridge over the entry to Torquay’s protected harbor
The original Victorian Pavilion (currently closed) on the beach promenade
Both sides of the long Princess Pier are lined with ornate metal benches - comfy!
Looking back toward the harbor and city center
Brightly painted beach huts on Corbyn Beach with the edifice of the Grand Hotel lurking just behind
The Grand Hotel built in 1881
Crazy Victorian architecture of the Grand Hotel
We decided to stay the night. If it was ok for Agatha Christie’s honeymoon a century ago, it’s ok for us now!
Well, there was a slight issue with pigeons peering in our open windows…. If you look close you can see an uncertain Chris looking out
The library with its’ slightly gaudy wallpaper
The even more gaudy stairway chandelier
Sorely tempted to take a dip in the indoor pool
Is it because it’s midweek or just too chilly, but there seem to be a lack of people.
Oh yes, there’s a lot less people than usual because it’s been raining every single day!!! Most places are cold, damp and muddy. We’ve been told this is not a normal summer, but I’m starting to wonder if that’s just a ruse………… 🤔
Very cool place !!!
It was a bit chilly 🥶😜
But seriously – there was a funky vibe that we enjoyed very much!
Classic! Nice you had the place to yourselves.
Thanks for sharing!!
