Around Glencoe

The Glencoe Valley is an area in the western Scottish Highlands featuring rocky peaks, gushing waterfalls and broad expanses. Formed from the caldera of an ancient super volcano, the geography was dramatically sculpted by glaciers in the last ice age. It is known for fabulous hiking and mountaineering through picturesque, sweeping vistas. Sadly, the village of Glencoe is also infamous for the Glencoe Massacre of 1692 – when government soldiers, who were billeted with the MacDonald clan, suddenly turned on their hosts and slaughtered 38 people. Though its history is sometimes brutal, the landscape is so striking that it has been used often as backdrop for major films such as Monty Python’s Holy Grail, Skyfall and multiple Harry Potter movies.

    1. Happy Birthday Chris!

Glencoe Valley is beautiful in an ominous sort of manner. I hope the reenactment wasn’t too painful. It’s best to not to be so hard on yourself though since, in fact, I believe that’s my job.

      1. Thanks for the bday wishes Guy! Fortunately, being a full continent and ocean away, the abuse from my soccer lads is minimal. I’ll take the less painful reenactment : )

    2. Thank you big sis!! I’ll take the Draco punches, so long as I don’t have to eat one of Hagrid’s stoat sandwiches 😋

  1. Gorgeous blog! Thank you for this blast of Highlands’ green and breathtakingly dramatic landscape, perfect for the celebration of a #60 birthday, which I hope you are still celebrating! ❤️

    1. Thank you Nancy!!! Yes, the celebration extended nicely into the evening with a lovely Indian dinner 😊
Please pass on my best to the rest of the clan! ❤️
