Aorai Trail

We hiked a little more than halfway up the Aorai Trail on Tahiti.  It took us over 5 hours to cover just less than 7 miles, and 2,500 feet in elevation gain, to Fare Mato (the first of 2 covered safety refuges along the trail).  Views were insane when the clouds broke, but mostly we hiked in an amphitheater of dense mists.  Even through the heavy cover of white, we could tell there were some seriously sheer drop offs on either side of some very skinny, wet and slippery trail.  It was probably best that we couldn’t see what was below us at times because we would have been even more scared than we actually were!

Here’s a link to a YouTube vid showing the terrifying section of trail at the very end (which we, fortunately, did not get to).
