The Glencoe Valley is an area in the western Scottish Highlands featuring rocky peaks, gushing waterfalls and broad expanses. Formed from the caldera of an ancient super volcano, the geography was dramatically sculpted by glaciers in the last ice age. It is known for fabulous hiking and mountaineering through picturesque, sweeping vistas. Sadly, the village of Glencoe is also infamous for the Glencoe Massacre of 1692 – when government soldiers, who were billeted with the MacDonald clan, suddenly turned on their hosts and slaughtered 38 people. Though its history is sometimes brutal, the landscape is so striking that it has been used often as backdrop for major films such as Monty Python’s Holy Grail, Skyfall and multiple Harry Potter movies.
