Devon

While in Devon we decided to explore a couple more holiday beach destinations. On the northern coast, the city of Ilfracombe is home to Tunnels Beaches. In the 1820’s, tunnels were hand carved through the rocky sea cliffs in order to create separate, private bathing areas for men and women according to Victorian etiquette. Local entrepreneurs developed the tunnels and bathing pools to transform the small fishing village of Ilfracombe into a popular seaside resort. On the southern coast, Burgh Island, connected to the mainland at low tide by Bigbury Beach, is a popular holiday resort, too. An iconic art deco landmark, the Burgh Island Hotel was also the location for one of Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries.
